Celebrating Black History

February 27th, 2025

At Pacifica, we believe that every person is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), reflecting His beauty, creativity, and purpose. As we celebrate Black History, we recognize the profound impact of Black leaders who have shaped history, led with excellence, and embodied the truth that all people—regardless of background—are called to live lives of significance.

Pacifica is committed to being a place for all neighborhoods in West Los Angeles, a microcosm of our broader community where students from different backgrounds learn, grow, and worship together. This vision echoes Revelation 5:9, where people from "every tribe and language and people and nation" stand united before God. By honoring Black history, we celebrate the rich diversity that makes our school, our city, and our faith stronger.

Honoring leaders, scholars, and entertainers who have made an impact. Join me in reflecting on the work and life of Condoleezza Rice, Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Denzel Washington, and Anika Prather.

Condoleezza Rice: A Diplomatic Trailblazer

A woman of faith, Condoleezza Rice overcame the barriers of segregation to become the first Black woman to serve as U.S. Secretary of State. A scholar, pianist, and mentor, Rice has dedicated her life to public service and education. Her leadership reminds us that God calls us to wisdom, excellence, and perseverance.

Barack Obama: A Leader of Hope

As the first Black President of the United StatesBarack Obama inspired a generation to believe in hope and change. His historic presidency demonstrated that leadership should reflect the diversity of God's creation, uniting people across backgrounds and perspectives to pursue justice and opportunity for all.

Colin Powell: A Life of Service and Integrity

A four-star general and statesman, Colin Powell was the first Black U.S. Secretary of State and the first Black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Powell’s dedication to service, integrity, and mentorship reflects a life lived with purpose—one that calls others to lead with character and conviction.

Denzel Washington: A Storyteller with Purpose

A celebrated actor and philanthropist, Denzel Washington has used his platform to tell powerful stories that highlight history, resilience, and faith. A man deeply committed to God, Washington often encourages young people to trust in Christ’s plan for their lives, knowing that their talents are meant to glorify Him.

Dr. Anika Prather: Restoring the Great Conversation

As a scholar and advocate for classical educationDr. Anika Prather has dedicated her work to ensuring that Black students see themselves in the great thinkers of history. By reclaiming classical texts and their connection to African American heritage, she helps students understand their role in the grand story God is writing.

A Legacy That Shapes Pacifica

At Pacifica Christian, we strive to be a school where students from all backgrounds feel welcomed and valued to pursue truth and excellence. We celebrate Black history not just in February but as part of the greater story of God’s creation, where every person has a role to play in His kingdom.

As we look to the future, we pray that our school will continue to be a place that reflects the beauty of God’s diverse world, just as Revelation 5:9 envisions—a community of students, teachers, and families from every neighborhood, standing together in unity and purpose.
