Club Spotlight - The Diversity Council

February 9th, 2024

The Diversity Council at Pacifica was formed three years ago to highlight and celebrate the different diversity groups here at Pacifica. The official Council consists of six students, however any student can join the club as a whole and events are open to the entire student body. This year, the Diversity Council members are Moriah Willard (‘24), Jenna Kim (‘26), Elijah Segal (‘25), Tselot Lemma (‘26), Jhoselyn Rubio (‘25), and Zara Magner (‘25). This group typically meets weekly to plan events for each month that center around recognizing and learning about different cultures. For example, this past month they set up tables with small activities to teach students about the Chinese Lunar New Year, and had a boba truck on campus.

Moriah Willard, Diversity Council President, believes that this club is an important organization at Pacifica in order to highlight the various groups of students that we have here and to invite the larger community to share in the different cultural traditions of these groups.

“I chose to be a part of the Diversity Council because I wanted to do something important for Pacifica that would last beyond my time here,” said Moriah.

Many Diversity Council events include guest speakers from the community who share about their professional and personal experiences as members of specific populations– either as persons of color, members of religious traditions, or individuals part of cultural practices. Last year, speakers came to share about their career experiences for AAPI Heritage Month, Black History Month, and Latin & Hispanic Heritage Month. Their biggest event of the year is the Cultural Appreciation Fest in the spring, where different groups of students organize tables to share about their cultures with all of Pacifica.

“My favorite thing about this group is that we’re all working towards the same goal of wanting to get to know more not only about other peoples’ cultures, but also sharing the things we love about our own cultures,” said Moriah. “I hope that people will learn more about their fellow students and want to hop on board when we get to learn and celebrate their culture so they get to share what makes it special to them!”

We’re looking forward to more events by the Diversity Council this year, and are proud to have a group of students committed to lifting up the traditions and voices of different cultures around campus.
