A Note on Veterans Day from the Head of School
November 10th, 2023
Several years ago, I was at Bed Bath and Beyond preparing for the holidays when I bumped into a former student. It was a joy to see Larry. He hadbeen a joy to teach. His upbringing was difficult, and there was a lot going on in his life during his high school years. Nonetheless, he worked hard in my class, and we developed a strong relationship. As I said hello, something seemed different. First, the thin, small kid in high school was now a muscle-bound Marine who had just arrived home from Iraq. I almost didn’t recognize him. I leaned in, and with vigor, I said, “Larry? How are you doing? Good to see you. It’s been a few years.” He uttered words with pacing and in a tone that seemed different. “I am back home from serving two tours of duty in Fallujah. Good to see you, Mr. Knight.” His eyes looked vacant; his pace was slow, and the phrase “two tours in Fallujah” startled me. At that point, I knew he was struggling. I knew Fallujah was amongst the most gruesome places of the war. It was house-to-house combat. What Larry must have seen in those tours and the things he was asked to do were unspeakable. I didn’t press him about any details. I only offered him my presence and our history. This encounter reminded me of the thousands of stories of our veterans that are untold. Stories of heroism, service, community, tragedy, patriotism, sacrifice and struggle. These are men and women who are committed to something bigger than themselves. Their lives must be honored, and their stories must be told.
So, every November 11th, we pause and come together as Americans to celebrate Veterans Day. There are parades, ceremonies, and moments of silence. The significance of Veterans Day extends beyond the celebrations. It is a reminder of the enduring values of duty, honor, and sacrifice that veterans represent. On this day, starting at the close of World War I, we express our gratitude and pay tribute to the selfless heroes who have dedicated their lives to protect our freedoms and values. As we celebrate Veterans Day, let us remember the heroes like Larry, who embody the spirit of courage, resilience, and selflessness. Their dedication to our country inspires us all, and it is our duty to ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten. It's a day to express our heartfelt gratitude to all veterans for their unwavering commitment to protecting the freedoms we hold dear.
Larry, thank you for your friendship and service. I will never forget.
