Andres Fierro ’19, Finds Calling in Music Composition

May 1st, 2023

Andres Fierro’s love for music began at a young age. He grew up in a household where music was always present, and he was exposed to a wide range of genres and styles. As he got older, Fierro began to explore music on his own, and he quickly discovered a talent for composing and musical direction. As a student at Pacifica, he became involved with the school’s music program, first as a violinist, then as a pianist after teaching himself piano for a year. Pursuing this new-found love, he also picked up other keyboard instruments, bass guitar, clarinet, and percussion. Around the same time, he began experimenting with composition, first writing pieces commissioned by his school orchestra and string quartet. After a short time, he found his calling in music and is currently finishing a BA in Music Composition and Conducting at Chapman University with a minor in Sound Design at the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts.

During his time at Pacifica, Fierro was a member of the school’s music program and participated in various theatrical productions. “Being a student at Pacifica prepared me for college, beyond academics,“ says Fierro. “I feel it was important because it challenged me to grow as a person, son, brother, friend, Christian, and artist.” Among his favorite memories as a Seawolf is the All-School Retreat. “The size of the school makes for a completely different learning environment. But it also doesn’t detract from any of the experiences offered. There are still many opportunities to be involved with the arts, athletics, clubs and campus life, and the spiritual life at the school. It was the complete high school experience but with one difference…community.” Fierro certainly took every opportunity that was offered to him at Pacifica and as a senior, he was honored with the prestigious Founding Artist Award, forever leaving his mark on the PACARTS program with his dedication to creative excellence.

After graduating from Pacifica Christian, Fierro went on to study music at Chapman University, where he has continued to develop his craft. In addition to composing and conducting, he has also explored other aspects of music production, such as audio engineering and sound design. Fierro’s last two years of philosophy and theology at Pacifica were particularly impactful in preparing him for college coursework. “That experience gave me a foundation for becoming my own independent person, which is one of the most valuable gifts to give a young student entering a daunting academic environment like college,” reflects Fierro. “Of course, every class challenged me academically. But, the classes later in my high school career challenged me to think for myself and keep an open mind.”

Fierro's compositions draw on a range of influences, from traditional orchestral palettes to jazz harmonies and rhythms. His music has explored various styles, including Blues, Samba, Bossa Nova, Jazz, Orchestral, Pop, Funk, R&B, and Musical Theater. He takes inspiration from real-world stories, looking to elevate the importance of the individual, human experience. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Fierro is also passionate about music education. He has worked as a music instructor at various schools and music programs, sharing his knowledge and expertise with young musicians.

As he prepares to graduate from Chapman University, Fierro looks forward to pursuing a career in music and continuing to create and share his music with the world. His time at Pacifica Christian helped set him on this path, and he is grateful for the support and encouragement he received from his teachers and mentors along the way. “There is something so special about the school that is very hard to explain.” Fierro encourages anyone who is curious about Pacifica to explore the campus and community for themselves. “You’ll have the best time growing closer to God and your peers, partaking in the extracurricular programs in the arts and athletics, and by the end of your four years, you’ll walk away with the feeling of confidence that every young adult needs to face the world.” Fierro believes that music has the power to change lives, and he is committed to using his talents to make a positive impact on the world. Whether he is composing a new piece, conducting an orchestra, or mentoring a young musician, Fierro is always striving to create something beautiful, something meaningful, and something that will inspire others to do the same.
