Students Explore Technology, Communication, and Ethics

March 12th, 2024

AI & Virtue
Pacifica students are on a journey to see how AI will impact learning and education. How can this new technology be navigated? What are its positive uses? What are the dangers? English teacher Hilary Miller, Computer Science teacher Andrew Budiman, and parents Jamie and Erin Siminoff have teamed up with six students to answer these questions through a new class called AI and Virtue. The central project is for each student to use AI to research, write, and publish a book in one semester and to do so with virtue. Can it be done? What will they learn? How will Pacifica build on the positive use of AI and machine learning next year and beyond?

Here is some sample work from our students and faculty:

WHISPERS OF THE PAST BY DOGA ARIER

"In "Whispers of the Past," Catalina Vargas embarks on a globe-trotting adventure with the spirit of Edward Harrington, a 19th-century explorer, to uncover historical artifacts that bridge the past and the present. Their quest leads them from the mysteries of Egypt's pyramids to the ancient dynasties of China, the Renaissance wonders of Italy, and beyond, revealing humanity's enduring quest for knowledge and connection to the cosmos. Along the way, Catalina discovers her own strength and the true meaning of adventure, guided by Edward's wisdom and the historical secrets they unearth together. As Catalina returns home, transformed and ready to share their story, Edward's spirit finds peace, leaving a legacy of exploration and curiosity in Catalina's heart. "Whispers of the Past" is a tale of discovery, friendship, and the timeless bonds that link us to history's whispers.

THE GHOSTS OF MIDWAY BY ANDREW HUNG

"The Ghosts of Midway" follows the crew of the USS Midway as they unearth an ancient artifact with mysterious powers from a sunken Japanese ship during World War II. This discovery triggers supernatural phenomena, including the appearance of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's ghost, who warns them of the artifact's potential dangers. Lieutenant Emily Warren, intrigued by the artifact's history, and Ensign Hiro Tanaka, offering cultural insights, seek to unravel its mysteries. Skeptic Chief Petty Officer Samuel Jenkins and Captain Richard Holloway face the challenge of balancing the crew's safety with the ethical implications of the artifact's power.
